Birdie, Young Female, 45 pounds, Richmond VA
They call me Birdie…well my foster parents sometimes call me "Birdieroo" because I can jump so high that they think I must be part kangaroo! I've finished my heartworm treatment and have even gone through formal e-collar training. I know several commands and my foster Mom is continuing to work with me using positive reinforcement techniques. I'm doing a great job. I'm just really smart and full of energy so sometimes I need help focusing. My new person and/or family will need to commit to continuing to work with me on my manners. I do very well in my crate as long as I get enough exercise when I am out and I've never met a squeaky toy or person that I don’t love to play with.
I'm looking for an active home that can keep me busy but the most important thing to me is to be able to be around my people who I love to cuddle with on the couch and watch TV at the end of the day.
I get super excited around other dogs so the great folks at MomsVA think I would do best as an only dog or in a home with a young, very playful, middle- to large-sized male dog. My forever home should not have cats as I have a very strong prey drive. I’m kinda bouncy, so young children would not be best right now because I might accidentally knock them over in my excitement.
Even after my rough start in life, I am still full of joy and silliness. I make my foster family laugh every day! If you are looking for a loyal and loving furry family member and think we could be a match, click here.

Kelton, Adult Male, 40 pounds, Richmond VA
Hello. My name is Kelton and they call me a 1 ½ year old Lab/mix. I am looking for a home with a fenced yard and another dog who wants to be my fur-bestie-playmate. Right now I race my foster-sister Daisy around the yard to see who is the fastest and she loves it when I surprise her with a big, playful pounce.
I love chewing on bones and destroying toys to get the squeaker. I am very smart and love to learn new tricks and earn rewards. My foster mom is working with me to resist the urge to jump up near counters. It’s pretty tough when I see or smell something I want, but I am working really hard to learn to resist.
I love walks and car rides and cuddling with my foster mom either in bed or on the sofa. I am crate- and house-trained. When I go in my crate, I love to get a KONG with frozen peanut butter and a carrot to chew on. I will also “talk” to you when I want something or it’s my bedtime. I speak to my foster mom in little woofs to let her know I need to G-O!
If you can’t resist my handsome face, click here to see if we could be a match.

9/26/2020 -Nora adopted.....Diane looking at other apps to see if one is good fit for just Toby
Toby, Adult Male, 10 pounds & Nora, Adult Female, 14 pounds, Richmond VA
Hello there. I’m Nora (on the right) and this is my buddy Toby. I’m speaking for the both of us because Toby is pretty shy right now. The wonderful folks at MomsVA rescued us from a rather dreadful situation. Our owner had passed away and we were not well cared for or socialized. Toby is a Yorkie/mix. He is around 7 years young. I am a Yorkie/Schipperke mix and around 4 ½. We both had matted fur and needed veterinary care and are doing much better now. We are AMAZED to be in a loving and safe foster home and are looking forward to the time when new things, noises, and people aren’t so scary for us.
If you have thought about opening your heart and home to a couple of furry orphans who really need a chance to experience all the love that humans have to offer, we might be a good match for you. The best home for us would be very calm and predictable with one or more adults. Although we don’t dislike children, their sudden movements are still scary for us as we are still trying to figure them out. Having another confident, low-key canine around is not a requirement, but it would probably be helpful as a way for us to translate this new human-filled environment into doggy-terms. Due to lack of care, Toby needed to have 13 of his teeth removed. The vet exam also revealed a heart murmur. At this time he is not showing any symptoms of distress. He does not need medication now but might in the future.
Our road to feeling safe and accepting the love we are given may require you to be patient with us. We promise that we want to feel safe and happy as much as you want us to. If you think we could be a match – or a trio in this case – click here to tell MomsVA all about yourself.

Leo, Adult Male, 30 pounds, Richmond VA
My name is Leo and they call me “a 3-year-old beagle who is all about having fun.” I love to play tug of war, fetch with a ball, and find the squeakers in toys. I love carrots, apples, and ice and my favorite place to sleep in under the covers next to my foster mom. I am house- and crate-trained. I have completed Basic Level I training and am ready for Basic Level II training. I know what to do when you say sit, wait, down, stay, respect the hand, and focus. My foster mom says I am super-cute when my little paws get so excited because I want a treat. My paws are like “happy feet” and are too cute for words – but you will have to see that yourself. I love other dogs, riding in the car, and going for long walks or hikes. A challenge for me is that I have something called Resource Guarding. I’ll let the folks at MomsVA explain this part:
Resource guarding refers to a dog displaying behavior (growling, snapping, etc.) intended to convince other dogs or humans to stay away from a particular treasure or “resource.” The resource can be anything he thinks holds value. For example: empty food bag, marshmallow bag, bag of chips, sandwich, etc. In January 2019, Leo went to training at PawsCienda Pet Resort to work on his resource guarding and learning to be the best dog he can be. His foster mom and his trainer worked with him on correcting the resource guarding. Leo wears an e-collar as part of his training, so an e-collar will need to be purchased when Leo is adopted.
Leo has come a long way since working with his trainer and foster mom. They continue to work on building Leo’s trust and reinforcing positive behavior. If you are interested in meeting and adopting Leo, MomsVA requests that you meet and work with his trainer in helping Leo have a successful and awesome transition into his new forever home. Leo is best fitted for a home with older children. A house or townhouse is required. The folks at MomsVA will want to set up a meet and greet and Leo’s trainer will be glad to work with you if you decide to adopt him.
So, you see, although I have a challenge to overcome, 99% of the time I am an awesome dog and really want to have a loving person and/or family to call my own. If you think you could be my special person, please click here to tell MomsVA more about yourself and see if we could be a match.

Kyra, Puppy Female, 16 pounds and growing, Richmond VA
Hey there! I’m Kyra and they call me a Lab/Weimaraner mix. I am about 3 months old and very sweet. Like all puppies, I need a home where I get lots of training so that I can understand how to be a good dog in a human world. And, of course I will also need to be watched to ensure that I do not get into too much mischief.
The best home for me will be one where there is lots of play time, lots of affection, and a bit of patience and persistence when it comes to training. I really WANT to learn – but I may try to convince you that it is more fun to play!

Nellie & Hunter, Puppy Male & Female, 10 pounds, Richmond VA
Hi! We are Nellie and Hunter, little long-haired dachshund mix puppies. We were born on April 16th and weigh about 10 pounds now but we are still growing.
As you can see, we are super cute and we can’t wait to find forever families. We do not need to find the same home – but we need the same kind of home.
As puppies we will do our best to charm you into playing with us instead of working on our training. We need a person and/or family that will do BOTH so that we can feel loved AND grow into really great well-behaved canines.
If you think you could be a match for either of us, click here.

Bo, Young Male, 75 pounds, Richmond VA
Hey there! I’m Bo. I am a German shepherd and I was born in November so I am still growing into my feet and ears! I am VERY sweet and love a good petting and brushing. I am learning to play with other dogs and love to run with them in the yard at my foster mom’s house. I do best with larger dogs. I get way too excited around small dogs, cats or other small animals. I am learning how to play with toys too. I LOVE playing in my baby pool by putting my entire face in the water!
I am very smart and am learning what to do when you say sit or stay. I am a big boy so I will need to go to training classes to continue to grow into the very best boy I can be. Like any puppy, I can be a bit mischievous if left alone!
I need a home with a fenced yard where my family will brush me, play with me, pet me and train me how to behave in the human world. I will try to convince you to skip the training and just play – so I need a person and family that will not be swayed by my adorable face!

Hazel, Senior Female, 30 pounds, Richmond VA
Hi! I'm Hazel and I would love to find my forever home. I love to ride in the car and I also love to be with my person or family. I had a family of my own but my first mom died and my first dad couldn't manage my care because he had to care for his 2-legged child, his house, and go to work. I really miss my first family and would like to find another family to call my own.
I am just a family kinda girl. I'm only 30 pounds so I don't take up much space. I'm still quite active at 15 but I am also content to relax with you and just hang out. I have some allergies, so I need to keep my treats limited to my special food so I don't get all red and itchy and need medication (although I will try to work my charms on you for all kinds of food!). Although I am not picky about food, I can be selective when choosing my dogs friends.

Solo, Adult Male, 58 pounds, Richmond VA
Hey there. I'm Solo and my foster mom calls me “a remarkable dog.” When my foster mom says “Stick ‘em Up!” – I raise my front 2 paws in the air like a captured bandit! I am super smart and love to learn new things.
I lived with a young married couple for a year but they were very social and having so many people around triggered something overly protective in me so I nipped one of their friends. I worked with a canine behaviorist and did very well.
I think the best home for me is one where I can connect with someone who wants to teach me new things (I love to use my smart brain!) and where I get to be the only dog in a home with one or more adults. I have some doggy friends but I when I am at home I like to play with my toys and my person.
I'm 10 1/2 years young so I really know how to have great house manners and have no issues ‘roaming free’ in the house. If you are looking for that one furry friend who wants to learn all kinds of great tricks, then I might be just the right ‘best friend’ for you! Kelly, Young Female, 65 pounds, Richmond VA
Hi, my name is Kelly and Moms VA is helping me find a home. I am full grown and 2 years young. I am kennel-trained but need lots of activity and would love a big yard to run in and playtime with my new person/family. I have also enjoyed trips to the dog park and playing with other dogs. I am strong and like to play hard so I usually do best when playing with dogs my size. Sometimes I might be too rough for a smaller dog or cat or smaller children.
I am very smart. I have completed basic training and would like to continue using my brain to learn new things in more training classes. They say I am an “AKC registered” German Shepherd. All I know is that I really like to keep things in order and sometimes I can be a bit pushy about it. Being around people who are confident and like to be my leader will make me feel the most secure. It will also help me feel safe when I am introduced to new people and things. The best home for me would be one where everyone in the home can be my leader, which may be one with older kids or no children. Once I know someone is in charge, I understand my place in the pack and will look to that person to understand and follow the rules.
If you love to be a strong leader and are looking for a companion to have adventures with who would love to let you be in charge all the time, please click here to see if we could be a match!

Heya! I’m Leo and I love to play play play…..fetch, tug of war, find the squeaker in the toy – you name it! I also love carrots and ice! I enjoy playing with other dogs and car rides! And when I want a treat I get so excited that I do a little dance with all four feet. You simply have to see it to believe it!
My foster mom has been letting me sleep under the covers next to her, and that has been pretty awesome. I have done very well with house- and crate-training. I have completed Basic Level I dog training and I am ready for Basic Level II. I am very smart and know what to do when you say: sit, wait, down, stay, respect the hand, and focus. What I need to work on is guarding my “resources.”
I am working with a trainer and my foster mom right now. I am learning NOT to display behavior (growling, snapping, etc.) intended to convince other dogs or humans to stay away from a particular treasure or “resource” (food, treats, toys, a place, a bed or favorite chair). I am making good progress and the trainer is willing to continue my work with my new family.

Murphy, Young Male, 43 pounds and growing, Richmond VA Courtesy Listing
Hi there. My name is Murphy and MomsVA is helping me find a new family because my pack is splitting up. I know it will tough for them to say goodbye to this handsome face! I’m current on all my vaccinations and also microchipped. And I’m really smart too! I’m only 5 months old and I already know how to ring a bell on the patio door when I need to go potty. I also know what to do when someone says ‘sit’, ‘stay’, and ‘lie down.’ And I am used to having my own kennel to nap and sleep in.
I hope for a new family that can teach me tons of new things because I really like to learn. I’d also like to be active so that I can have fun playtime and then be tired and ready for a good rest.
If you just can’t resist these pointy ears and penetrating eyes, click here to see if we could be a match.

Lola, Young Female, 45-50 pounds, Richmond VA
Hi there, I’m Lola. I am a boxer/hound/pit mix who loves to snuggle with my foster family at any time of the day– and that includes sitting in anyone’s lap who will let me.
I’m about 18 months old and I am crate-trained and good at walking on a leash. I love a good walk to explore. I also like to use my smart brain to learn new tricks – especially if it means I get a treat when I get it right!
I am very gentle and I love kids and my dog sisters – although cats I am less sure about. My favorite activities are sunning myself outside in the grass and playing tug-of-war. I also like to nap on the couch. My foster mom says I am very mellow for a puppy!

Bel Bel, Young Female, 30 pounds, Richmond VA
Hello there! My name is Bel Bel and I am 3 years young! I am a dachshund/beagle mix and I’m looking for a new home because my first person had to move and could not take me along. I miss my person but I know that I will find another loving person and/or family because I am a really great dog (and humble too!).
I love, love children and going for walks. I’m also quite content meandering in the yard (or chasing squirrels) and lounging in the sun. I'm smart, too! I know a few tricks – but my foster mom says my best trick is always letting her know when I need to go outside to go potty. I have great hearing and always know what is going on around me. I like to a few minutes to get to know new people so if you wait just a few moments for me to come to you, I simply cannot resist making new friends!
My first home was pretty quiet, so that is what I am used to but I’m sure I can fit in just about anywhere. And if you have a low sofa or chair to sit in and would love a furry face on your lap with big appreciative eyes gazing up at you…..click here to see if we could be a match!

Hey! I’m Little AB and I was born on February 4th. I’m having a lovely time in my foster home but it’s time for me to find my forever family. My mom is a Yorkie/Border Terrier and my dad is a Shih Tzu. Does that make me a Shorkie-Bord Terrier?

Moseley, Young Male, 40 pounds, Richmond VA
Hey there. My name is Moseley and my foster mom calls me a Bassador (I’m a Basset/Lab mix). I’m about 3 ½ years old and a pretty laid-back, easy-going guy. I like to get along with everyone but dogs who are too high energy can make me get a bit cranky. I like to play, but not too rough.
My foster mom says I am doing great with house-training and I like to make her happy. I’m excited to have a foster home (I was running around on my own in North Carolina before MomsVA took me in) and I cannot wait to have a person and/or family of my very own.

Leo, Puppy Male, 22 pounds, Richmond VA
I’m Leo. I’m 6 months old and they say I am a “beagle mix.” I am a very sweet snuggler and love to give kisses to people of all ages. I also have very soft ears that my foster mom loves to touch.
I play well with other dogs but I do need to learn some better doggy manners. MomsVA would like me to have a home where I can go to puppy training classes so that I’m not so rude and cranky when there is food around. Other than that little fixable issue, I am just an energetic, playful, fun little guy who loves his squeaky toys and treats.

Per Sarah 12/7 - pill listing - hopefully her owners are working things out!
**Courtesy Listing: Oakley Needs a Very Special Person**
MomsVa is hoping to help Oakley (on the right) find a special owner who can help her with some behaviors that make her unsuitable for her current home. She is 2 years old and has been with her current family since she was 5 weeks old after they found her through a listing on CraigsList. She is spayed and current on all vaccinations.
In her current home, her mom says that she will sleep and sunbathe with the other dogs. She allows the other dogs to clean her and even growl a bit on occasion and there are no issues.
However, if the other dogs become agitated (barking or nervous/cowering), her mom writes that they have to “grab [Oakley] and control her.” Her mom goes on to say “we are now dealing with a pregnancy in our home and the stress of keeping all the dogs safe is too much” and “we need to find a home for her within the next 6 months.”
Oakley needs a home with an experienced dog owner or rescue group who understands what needs to be done to identify, manage and/or resolve her issues. Her owner had contacted several other rescues but none have been able to offer Oakley a space.
If you would like to help Oakley, please click here to submit an adoption questionnaire to MomsVA.

Georgia, puppy Female, 12 pounds, Richmond VA
Hey there. I’m Georgia. I’m a sweet 4-month-old scruff ball who loves to run in the yard and wrestle with friends. I can make your heart melt with my gorgeous light brown eyes. I've got just enough energy to be a playful puppy and then I just love to be a little snuggle bug. I am still fine-tuning my house-breaking and leash-walking skills.
I could be happy in a home with a nice grassy yard. There can be other dogs or I could be on my own (as long as I get those snuggles). If you think we could make a good match, please click here.

Bastian, Young Male, 15-20 pounds, Richmond VA
I’m Bastian. I’m 2 years old, around 20 pounds, and they say I am a “long haired, standard dachshund.” I am SUPER social and love car rides and just being ‘out and about.’ I get along with people of all ages because they give me LOTS of attention! I am also okay with being around other dogs and even horses. Although I get along fine with other dogs, I am happiest when I am the center of all the human attention. I would like a person and/or family who wants to take me everywhere and allows me to be an integral part of their day-to-day activities.
I’m crate-trained and fine-tuning my house-breaking. I really don’t like being alone and am vocal about it, so apartment life is probably not the best for me. If you are looking for a cute, furry friend to share your adventures with, click here to see if we could be a match!

Falkor, Young Male, 15 pounds, Richmond VA
I’m Falkor. I’m about 7 months old and they say I am a “standard dachshund/bichon frise mix.” I’m a very gentle soul and like to take a bit of time warming up to new people. Once I see that someone is gentle like me, I can stick to them like Velcro. And I’m all about playtime! I love playing with the children in my foster family. I like toys of all kinds and romping around outside with furry and human friends. After a good play session, I like napping in a little spot just under my foster mom’s feet.
I’m crate-trained and fine-tuning my house-breaking (after all, I am still a puppy). The family I wish for is one where there is a yard and some children I can play with. Due to my gentle nature, larger animals (like horses) are a bit much for me. If you are looking for a playful, Velcro, cuddle-muffin – click here to see if we could be a match!
